Zelda II - The Adventure of Link (USA) (Virtual Console)

About This Game

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is a side-scrolling action-adventure game released for the NES in 1988. It deviates from the top-down view of its predecessor, featuring platforming, RPG elements like experience points and magic, and a larger overworld to explore.

Story

Princess Zelda has fallen under a sleeping spell cast by the evil wizard Ganon’s minion. To break the curse, Link must travel across Hyrule, collect the six crystals hidden in palaces, and awaken the princess before Ganon’s forces can conquer the kingdom.

Guide & Tips

Begin by exploring the overworld to find towns and dungeons. Talk to NPCs for hints, collect experience points by defeating enemies to level up Link’s life, magic, and attack. Use the 'Spell' menu (accessed via Start) to equip spells like Shield or Jump. In each dungeon, defeat the boss to obtain a key item that opens the next area. Save often using the password system.

Controls

D-Pad: Move Link; A Button: Jump / Use selected item; B Button: Sword attack / Cast spell; Start Button: Pause / Open menu; Select Button: Bring up map / Switch item.

Cheats & Passwords

Infinite Lives: Pause the game and press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A. Infinite Magic: At the title screen, hold Select and press A, B, B, A. Level Up Instantly: While paused, press Left, Right, Up, Down, A, B.

Trivia

Zelda II was the first Zelda game to use side-scrolling platforming and introduce RPG elements such as experience points, magic, and a level-up system. It also featured the first appearance of the iconic 'Link's Awakening' theme as an overworld tune.
