Zelda II - The Adventure of Link (USA)

About This Game

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is the second installment in The Legend of Zelda series, released for the NES in 1988. It shifts from the top-down action‑adventure of its predecessor to a side‑scrolling platformer with RPG elements, as Link journeys to rescue Princess Zelda from a sleeping spell.

Story

After defeating Ganon in the original Zelda, Link learns that Princess Zelda has fallen under a sleeping spell cast by her own brother, Prince of Darkness. To break the spell, Link must place the Triforce of Courage into the palace's altar, a quest that takes him across six side‑scrolling palaces filled with monsters, traps, and guardians.

Guide & Tips

Begin by exploring the overworld to gain experience points (XP) from defeating enemies. When you have enough XP, visit a town and speak to the sage to level up your Attack, Magic, or Life. Learn spells such as Shield, Jump, and Life by finding magic containers hidden in palaces. Use the map (Select) to track your progress and remember to replenish magic by standing on magic pools. Bosses often have patterns; observe their attacks before counter‑attacking with your sword or appropriate spell.

Trivia

Zelda II was the first Zelda game to use side‑scrolling platforming and RPG mechanics such as experience points, leveling, and magic spells. Its overworld map is actually a rotated and expanded version of the original Legend of Zelda map, and the game introduced the iconic 'magic container' items that later became staples of the series.
