Dragon Quest IX - Hoshizora no Mamoribito (Japan)

About This Game

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is a role‑playing game developed by Level-5 and published by Square Enix for the Nintendo DS. Players create a customizable Celestial guardian who, after losing their halo and wings, must journey across the world to regain their divine status while helping inhabitants and battling monsters.

Guide & Tips

Begin by creating your character and selecting a starting vocation. Talk to every NPC to receive quests and hints. Explore towns, dungeons, and the overworld to gather items, earn experience, and uncover hidden treasures. Use the job system to switch vocations and learn new abilities; mastering multiple jobs grants powerful hybrid skills. Upgrade weapons and armor at shops, and don’t forget to synthesize items for better gear. The game supports local wireless multiplayer—invite friends to join your party for cooperative quests and tag battles. Save frequently, and use the Y button to check your map and radar for nearby points of interest.

Controls

D-pad: Move character; A: Confirm / Talk; B: Cancel / Menu back; X: Open main menu; Y: View map / Radar; L: Cycle left shoulder shortcut; R: Cycle right shoulder shortcut; Touch Screen: Select options, navigate menus.

Trivia

Dragon Quest IX was the first mainline entry in the series to feature online multiplayer via the Nintendo Wi‑Fi Connection, allowing up to four players to cooperate locally or trade items. It also introduced the robust job‑change system that lets players switch vocations at any time, a mechanic later refined in subsequent titles. The game received downloadable content (DLC) through the Nintendo Wi‑Fi Connection, including extra quests, items, and special monsters—a first for the Dragon Quest franchise. Its Japanese subtitle, "Hoshizora no Mamoribito," translates to "Guardian of the Starry Skies."
