About This Game
Yoshi's Island DS is a 2006 side‑scrolling platformer for the Nintendo DS developed by Nintendo EAD. Players control Yoshi and can switch between six different baby characters—Mario, Luigi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Wario and Yoshi himself—each with unique abilities to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies.
Story
When Baby Bowser and his sidekick Kamek kidnap the infant heroes—Mario, Luigi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Wario and Yoshi—Yoshi sets out on a daring quest across vibrant worlds to rescue them. By using each baby’s unique abilities, Yoshi must overcome obstacles, defeat enemies, and restore peace to the Mushroom Kingdom before the villains can power up Baby Bowser’s castle.
Guide & Tips
Start by learning each baby's special ability: Mario can throw fireballs, Luigi floats higher, Peach can parasol glide, Donkey Kong can smash blocks, Wario can perform a powerful dash, and Yoshi can eat enemies and turn them into eggs. Use the touch screen to aim Yoshi's tongue and to pull up the map. Keep an eye on the baby's happiness meter; letting it drop too low will cause Yoshi to lose the baby. Collect as many stars and coins as possible to unlock bonus mini‑games and extra lives.
Controls
D‑Pad: Move Yoshi left/right, duck, look up/down. A Button: Jump / Throw egg (when holding an egg). B Button: Use Yoshi's tongue to grab enemies or items. X Button: Hold to run (when combined with D‑Pad). Y Button: Switch between baby characters (or hold to view baby status). Start: Pause game. Select: Open map / view touch‑screen controls.
Trivia
Yoshi's Island DS was the first Yoshi title to appear on a handheld Nintendo system and introduced six playable baby characters, a first for the series. The game also features a unique 'happiness' mechanic that affects how long Yoshi can carry each baby.
